VoIP 101: Voice over IP for Beginners

For those who have never heard about the potential of VoIP, be prepared to radically change the way you think about your current long-distance calling plan. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is very simply, a method for taking ordinary analog audio signals and turning them into digital signals that can be sent over the Internet.

So what? Well, for those of you who are already paying a monthly fee for an Internet connection, this means that you can use that same connection to place free long distance phone calls. This process works by using already available VoIP software to make phone calls over the Internet, essentially circumventing phone companies and their service charges.

Interestingly, VoIP is not an entirely new thing. In fact, a number of providing companies have been around for some time. But it has only been with the more recent explosion of high-speed internet access usage, that VoIP has gotten any attention. Now the major telephone carriers are setting up their own VoIP calling plans throughout the US, another testament to the potential of the technology.

How VoIP Is Used

While there are a number of ways that VoIP is currently being used, most individual callers fall into one of three categories: ATA, IP Phones, and Computer-to-Computer.

ATA or Analog Telephone Adaptor, is the most common way of using VoIP. This adaptor actually allows you to hook up the phone that is already in your house, to your computer, and then your Internet connection. What the ATA does, is turn the analog signals your phone sends out into digital signals that can be sent over the Internet. Setting up this system is quite simple. It simply requires that you order an ATA (its an adaptor remember), plug the cable from your phone which would normally go into the wall socket into the ATA, and then the ATA gets plugged into your computer, which is connected to the internet. Some ATAs include software that has to be installed on your computer before its ready, but basically it's quite a simple process. Then you are ready to make some calls.

The next type of VoIP usage utilizes IP Phones instead of your home phone. The IP Phone looks just like a normal phone, with all the same buttons and cradle, the only difference is that instead of having a normal wall jack connector, it has an Ethernet connector. This means, that instead of plugging in your IP phone to the wall jack like you would with a regular analog phone, it gets plugged directly into your router.

This option allows you to circumvent your personal computer, and it also means that you will not have to install any software, because its all built in to the handset. In addition, the fact that Wi-Fi IP phones will soon be available, which will allow subscribing callers to make VoIP calls from any Wi-Fi hot spot, make this option an exciting possibility.

The simplest and cheapest way to use VoIP is through computer-to-computer calls. These calls are entirely free, meaning no calling plan whatsoever. The only thing you need, is the software which can be found for free on the internet, a good internet connection, a microphone, speakers, and a sound card. Except for your monthly internet service fee, there is literally no cost for making these calls, no matter how many you make.

For large companies, VoIP also offers some very unique possibilities. Some larger companies are already utilizing the technology by conducting all intra-office calls through a VoIP network. Because the quality of sound is comparable to and in some cases surpasses that of analog service, some international companies are using VoIP to route international calls through the branch of their company nearest the call's destination and then completing it on an analog system. This allows them to pay local rates internationally and still utilize the same intra-office VoIP network that they would if they were calling someone in the next cubicle over.

Other Advantages of VoIP

While your current long-distance plan covers you for only one location, say calls made from your office, with VoIP, you can make a call anywhere that you can get a broadband connection. That is because all three methods above, unlike analog calls, send the call information via the Internet. This means you can make calls from home, on vacation, on business trips, and almost anywhere else. Anywhere you go, with VoIP you can bring your home phone along with you. In the same way, computer-to-computer connections mean that as long as you have your laptop and a connection, you're ready to go.

There are also some nifty benefits to having your calls transmitted over the Internet. For example, some VoIP service providers allow you to check your voicemail via your e-mail, while others allow you to attach voice messages to your e-mails.

How VoIP Works

The current phone system relies on a reliable but largely inefficient method for connecting calls known as circuit switching. This technique, which has been used for over 100 years, means that when a call is made between two people a connection is maintained in both directions between callers for the duration of the call. This dual directional characteristic gives the system the name circuit.

If, for example, you made a 30-minute call the circuit would be continuously open, and thus used, between the two phones. Up until about 1960, this meant that every call had to have an actual dedicated wire connecting the two phones. Thus a long distance call cost so much, because you were paying for pieces of copper wire to be connected all the way from your phone to the destination phone, and for that connection to remain constant throughout the call.

Today, however, your analog call is converted after leaving your house to a digital signal, where your call can be combined with many others on a single fiber optic cable. While this system is certainly an improvement over the past copper wire system, it is still quite inefficient. This inefficiency is due in part to the fact that the telephone line can't distinguish between useful talking and unneeded silences. For example, in a typical conversation while one person is talking the other person is listening.

Thus the current analog system uses roughly half its space sending useless messages like this silence. But there is also more information, even down to pauses in speech, which under a more efficient system can be effectively cut out rather than wasting the circuit space. This idea of only transmitting the noisy bits of a telephone call and saving a great deal on circuit space, is the basis of Packet-Switching, the alternative method to circuit switching that the VoIP phone system uses.

Packet-Switching is the same method that you use when you view a website. For example, as you read this website, your computer is not maintaining a constant connection to the site, but rather making connections to send and receive information only on an as needed basis (such as when you click on a link). Just as this system allows the transfer of information over the Internet to work so quickly, so also does it work in the VoIP system. While circuit switching maintains a constant and open connection, packet switching opens connections just long enough to send bits of data called packets from one computer to another.

This allows the network to send your call (in packets) along the least congested and cheapest lines available, while also keeping your computer or IP phone, free to send and receive messages and calls with other computers. This way of sending information, not to mention data compression, makes the amount of information which must be transmitted for every call at least 3-4 times less for VoIP than the exact same call in a conventional telephone system. For this reason, VoIP is so much cheaper than conventional calling plans.

The Future of VoIP

While most analysts believe it will be at least a decade before companies and telephone providers make the full switch to VoIP, the potential for the technology's use today is already quite astounding. A report by the Forrester Research Group predicts that by the end of 2006, nearly 5 million U.S. households will be using VoIP phone service. With the savings and flexibility that the technology already offers, and new advances just ahead on the horizon, we can expect those numbers will only increase in the future.

10 Ways Your Dreams Can Enhance Your Life

The ultimate purpose of dreaming is to provide you with daily guidance in your Life Journey ? to help you find the best way to solve problems and open your eyes to new opportunities so that you can be happy and feel complete. In fact, dreams most often relate to your circumstances of the past 24 to 48 hours and can assist you in the immediate future.

Here are ten ways your dreams can enhance your life.

1. Dreams tell you what's really going on in your life.

Dreams give you big, audacious, unmistakable clues as to what's wrong in your life, what's really going on. You may be grappling with the same problem over and over and never seem to find the solution. You'll be astounded when you discover what your dreams can tell you about what's really going on in your life.

2. Dreams tell you stuff you DON'T already know.

Dreams usually bring up issues and information that are not in your waking thoughts. Your dreams will give you fresh information, gob-smacking "aha!" moments and open your eyes to new insights, possibilities and opportunities!

Your dreams put you in direct contact and communication with your all-knowing, powerful inner self and allow you to see your magical inner world with your "dream eyes". Your incredible dream visions and symbols give you the inside track on your inner secret world ? some of which you're not aware of in your waking moments.

3. Dreams prioritize your problems.

Your dream world is like a great big problem-sorting-out, prioritization machine. Your sub-conscious knows exactly which problem is more important and should get your attention first to make the most profound difference in your life right away. So when you get a message in your dreams relating to a specific problem, you know what to concentrate on first, where you'll get the biggest return on your time and energy investment.

4. Dreams tell you what makes you tick.

You can find out all about yourself in your dreams ? it's like having the best personal therapist or life coach in the world at your beck and call 24*7. How do your beliefs and values affect your daily life? How do your emotions and fears trip you up? Why is your relationship failing? Why can't you earn more money?

You'll discover some amazing, life-changing things about yourself in your dreams. Find out about your "real" self ? what makes you tick. Your dream world doesn't lie ? it just brings the important things you need to know about yourself to your attention so you can be happier, healthier and wealthier.

5. Dreams uncover your flair and your flaws.

Your dream journey is all about respecting your own sacredness and internal divinity, about self-understanding and acceptance ? not self improvement. You're already perfect right now; you are already enough, you already have everything you need to realize your intended destiny. The only variable is how you choose to get there. And your dreams can guide you.

Do you have a hidden talent that you're not using? You may have a string of strengths that could be used together to achieve exactly what you want in life. Are you persisting with a flawed approach to something? What are your weaknesses, the chinks in your armour? Ours is a world of duality ? light and dark, joy and sorrow, strength and weakness ? power and fragility. Do you know how to best use your unique flair and how to bolster your flaws to achieve your personal goals? The good news is that the answers are in your dreams.

6. Dreams give you clear direction.

Dreams present you with options and choices ? point out the opportunities and potential obstacles ? give you a chance to re-evaluate the direction you are taking with a particular issue and alter your course for a smoother ride. Your dreams are of full of symbolism relating to DIRECTION ? look out for symbols like:

- Up or down
- Left or right
- Forwards or backwards
- Exits and entrances
- Ascending or descending
- Open or closed
- Light or dark
- Crossroads, forks in the road
- Bridges
- Stairways and ladders

When you evaluate these direction finders within the context of your dream you'll find some crystal clear messages and solutions.

7. Dreams are a dialogue, a two-way conversation.

Dreams are a dialogue between your inner self and your waking self ? your sub-conscious and your conscious self. And it's a two-way street. You receive messages and answers and you can ask for guidance and assistance in solving problems that you have right now. You can create your own Dream Meditation to explore a different aspect of yourself or issue you may be dealing with right now that you're looking for guidance on.

8. Dreams are great problem solvers.

Would you like to know if one of your dreams is providing you with a crystal clear solution? I had a dream recently which clearly showed me that taking on a certain work project would be disastrous. So I didn't. I discovered later that the work was not quite what it seemed and that I would have been pretty miserable had I taken it on.

You'll find that your dreams can provide you with amazing solutions to your current life situations and problems too.

9. Dreams remind you of important issues in your life.

When you are avoiding something important ? or putting it off ? or are really stuck with something in your life ? your dreams are just itching to show you a possible answer or a better way. Your dreams will hassle and harass you by sending recurring messages or you'll have dreams with a recurring theme until you take notice. It's like having your own personal Alert System.

10. Dreams give you the edge.

You can be totally "in the know" with regard to any circumstance in your life right now. Is somebody around you not being totally honest or giving you the true picture? What is really going on? What outcomes could you expect and what opportunities and obstacles are there ahead of you? If you really take the time to write your dreams down and interpret them you'll have the edge over others who don't have this powerful information. And you'll be able to better navigate your journey and solve your problems to give you the best possible outcome.

Model Dell: The Art of the Affiliate Coupon

Along with having an innovative supply chain, there's another reason Dell is the largest computer company in the world. They always offer great coupon codes to online affiliates that let the buyer "in" on deals that they otherwise wouldn't get.

By offering coupon and discount codes that are both new promotions and/or expiring deals, it motivates buyers into taking advantage of a one time offer. It's also a great way to push inventory and make room for new products.

Have you noticed Dell is now promoting digital cameras, flash memory, and more electronic products from other retailers? Their success in the e-commerce space comes with the help of affiliates, and now they are promoting a wide range of electronics with similar coupon codes to what was once only available to computer discounts. Promotions like these benefit the buyer AND seller.

If I were a retailer, I would model the dell coupons and coupon codes Dell provides. It really sells products, especially when it's an extra $50-$100 discount. This makes a consumer feel like they're getting the best deal out there, regardless of the actual final price. The only thing Dell lacks that can benefit affiliate marketing is great landing pages that explicitly outline the details of the coupon. Let's not confuse buyers, instead let's make sure they know what kind of deal they're getting, and point them to it. The online affiliate and retail community need to pull together to let buyers more easily understand the offer they're getting, and landing pages detailing an offer enhance online shopping.

There's a reason "dell coupon" was searched twice as much as "online coupon" in April (from Yahoo search statistics). It's because not enough affiliates are pushing their products with coupon codes. Retailers should model the Dell affiliate coupons offers; their success comes from many angles.

Gary Gray is a co-owner of CouponChief.com. You can find dell codes and more from almost any retailer at Coupon Chief!

A Winning Public Relations Game Plan

You want to sell your products or services, and that means good money management, top quality products or services, and hard work on your part. But, for REAL success, the icing on the cake is public relations.

Here's why. People act on their perception of the facts about you; those perceptions lead to certain, predictable behaviors; and, best of all, something can be done about both that will lead to achieving your objectives.

First, public relations creates, changes or reinforces public opinion -- you know, all those perceptions we just talked about.

Then it reaches, persuades and moves-to-actions-you-desire those very people whose behaviors affect your business. We're talking about actions like new customer development, retention of long-time patrons and increased product purchases.

Now, when you can actually see those behaviors you want so badly (hopefully matching the behaviors you said upfront you wanted), the public relations effort is complete, and a success.

How do you pull this off?

If you follow a game plan like this one, you should rank in order-of-importance those audiences with an interest in your organization, often referred to as stakeholders or "publics." They would include customers, prospects, media, the business community and local thought-leaders as well as a number of other interested groups.

What Do They Think of You?

You should interact with those audiences and gather their impressions of your organization, in particular, areas where problems may be brewing. Ask questions. Notice any negativity? Misconceptions? Inaccuracies? Rumors?

This is information gathering, opinion sampling, informal polling, if you will, but essential to any public relations effort. If resources are available, a modest opinion poll of the #1 priority audience also would be helpful.

How Much Behavioral Change is Needed?

Well, with opinion sampling of one kind or another underway, it's a good time to focus on any negative perceptions you discovered. Once they're identified and understood, a marker can be set down setting the degree of behavioral change you would like and that realistically can be expected and monitored in an agreed-upon time frame..

This becomes the goal against which the public relations program will finally be measured.

Create, Change or Reinforce Opinion?

Now, should those key audience perceptions be created from scratch, nudged in one direction or another, or simply reinforced? An important decision, because it will influence the direction, content and tone of all of your communications. Make it carefully.

The Persuasive Message

Once that decision is made, it's time to prepare messages tailored to each audience that, while providing details about your products and services, indirectly address those problem areas that came up during the information gathering meetings. Then, while you do the persuasive messages needed to bring those folks around, be guided by your behavior modification goal as well as the perception changes needed to achieve it.

Reaching Your Audience

How will you communicate each message to its audience? How will you reach these people? Your choices include face-to-face meetings, briefings, speeches, news releases, news announcement luncheons, emailings, media interviews, facility tours, special promotional events, a brochure, and a variety of other communications tactics.

And don't forget special event exposures as a means for reaching those target audiences with your messages. They usually make news and include activities such as open houses, roadshows, awards ceremonies, trade shows and contests.

Media That Target Your Audience

It sounds elementary, but selecting the right media to carry your messages demands that you be certain that each communications tool zeros in directly on the target audience. Example: little sense in using ride-time (rush hour) radio appearances if you're trying to reach retirees.

Signs of Improvement

So, how will you know whether your efforts are actually changing perceptions (and behaviors) for the better? As time passes, experience tells us that you will begin to notice increased awareness of your business and its role in the marketplace; a growing receptiveness to your messages by customers; increased public perception of the role your organization plays in its industry and in the community, as well as increasing numbers of prospects.

Achieving The Goal

To track actual results, you must speak once again - and on a regular basis -- with people among each of your key audiences. And also by monitoring print and broadcast media for mentions of your messages or viewpoints.

Each of these indicators will reflect how local feelings about your organization are changing. In turn, this will allow you to adjust your communications tactics in pursuit of the perceptions and behaviors you seek

The effort is worth it. Done correctly, when public relations results in altered perceptions and modified behaviors among groups of people important to your organization, you're talking about nothing less than its survival

Pieces of Time and Pivotal Moments

Life is comprised of pieces of time sprinkled with pivotal moments. Sometimes these moments have immediate impact. Other times, they are slow to manifest and reveal their importance. But if you listen closely to the soft whispers of life, they will guide you on an unexpected journey filled with beauty, understanding and fulfillment. One such moment occurred for me about eight years ago.

On this particular day, I was helping my mom redo her bedroom. We rearranged the furniture, cleaned, polished and changed the curtains and bedding. Then out came the new floral arrangements, potpourri and matching candles. Proudly, we stepped back to admire our work. That's when Mom decided we needed a little atmosphere and she lit the candles.

Evidently, there was a residue of cleaning solution on her hands, because the moment she flicked the lighter, flames burst in the air. Large blisters instantly formed on her hands and she began to shake. As the tears rolled down her face, she looked up at me and whispered, "The children."

Those were her first words, not a cry, not a scream, not a curse ? "the children". I panicked. I though she was in shock. I hurried her into the bathroom to tend to her wounds but the blisters were so large she couldn't move her fingers. I realized I would have to take her to the doctor; I was also concerned about her state of mind. Her response seemed so strange. "Mom, what do you mean, the children?" I asked.

She looked up at me with the sweetest, most sympathetic tear-filled eyes I had ever seen. "The poor children who get burnt." Then she continued to explain, "I saw it on Oprah. If this is painful for me, how much pain would a child be in? I feel so sorry for them?what they must go through."

That was her answer. My mom had second and third degree burns, her hands were swollen, blistered and shaking, but her tears were for the children. Children she saw on Oprah. My thoughts were less pure. At that moment, I didn't care about anyone but her.

Four years ago this October, I lost my mom to cancer. True to her nature, she never complained during her illness. Not once. Even in her suffering, she taught me valuable lessons. One of these lessons came when we were in her hospital room waiting for test results. The doctor finally arrived, flew into the room, delivered his devastating news and then abruptly left.

I was shocked, hurt and angry all at the same time. I turned to my mother and said, "I hate him." She looked at me with her beautiful blue eyes and said, "That's not nice. He was just doing his job. Can you imagine how hard it must be for him to have to tell his patients bad news like that?"

Oh, Mom, you certainly were something.

In the years since I lost my mom, things have changed in many ways. There are sorrows and bittersweet longings, but her gentle lessons continue to touch my life and guide me.

Mom would be proud to know that my husband John and I recently published our first children's book. Although we originally set out to write an entertaining story about a boy with school troubles, I soon discovered that John was the victim of a school bully. He had buried the hurt and humiliation deep inside, but as we stepped further into the writing process, the impact of his experience was evident.

My mother's lessons taught me to listen closely to the soft whispers of life. This perspective helped me to realize that a message emerged from our collaboration, beyond the pages of our book. This knowledge changed the direction of our lives.

Our children's book became the basis for an anti-bullying program. The program, filled with stories, songs and practical advice, teaches children about the consequences of bullying and helps to provide a safe and healthy learning environment.

Today, as John and I speak at schools and community events, I pray that our pieces of time sprinkled with pivotal moments serve to help the children. Because now, I understand.

AWARENESS

Necks crane as innocent eyes follow my every move

Silent, enthralled children,

A captive audience

In the wake of their hushed response,

I hear the echo of my own words.

Anticipation looms

Awaiting an answer

A solution, an explanation,

I cannot provide.

I have let them down

For I can only share my story,

Not repair the social injustice that has befallen them.

They are victims,

As once was I

With only my experience to offer,

I silently pray to ease their anguish,

Whilst knowing I cannot.

Protect Your One and Only Brain From Cell Phone Radiation

Cell Phones have become a part and parcel of everybody's life. They are no more the nifty gadget that a selected few carried around. They are carried around like the life depends on it. This is true, isn't it, how many relationships have broken because someone forgot to take that all important call because they left behind or lost their cell phone. The cell phones are now the digital tracking device for spouses and businesses alike. One could be contacted anywhere on earth at any time of the day, because of the cell phones. These nifty gadgets work at close proximity to our brain, and you have to be cautious about this. After all everyone just gets to have one, and just only one brain unlike the eyes or ears. Each and every part of the brain controls a big "Human Feature Set". All small damage to a minute portion may stop your ability to speak or move one of the muscles. When there is so much debate about whether they radiation out of the cell phones can cause brain cancer or tumor or other yet Unknown diseases, you got to listen as a skeptic. Unless there is 100% proof that the radiations don't cause any problems you got to be on side that considers this harmful.

Now wait a minute am I trying to scare you off from one of the most useful tool invented in this century. No, I am trying to bring home the point that you have to consider this issue a little bit more seriously. There are two ways to protect you from these damages. The first is through the hands free products like the speaker phone. These reduce the damage caused if any because they are not near your brain and they can be kept at safe distances while you speak. This is a must have, as this also solves the other deadly by product of cell phone usage, accidents. This is mandated by law to have hands free products. Once again people want to have the phones closer to their ears and they en dup in wireless headsets. The main reason is privacy; they don't want anyone else to hear about the conversation on the phone. This is not possible on the speaker phones. The other important technology that has evolved is the cell phone radiation protectors; these allow you to work the cell phone in a typical posture. Do you know that the problem exists for the handset in your home phone as well?

Cell phones work using both the electrical and magnetic energy, the voice modulations are transmitted as digital or analog signals using these waves. This happens at the speed of light. They work at very low frequencies. Similar to X Rays they pose some health hazards as well. There is the part where they are capable of effecting different chemical reactions. This is the most hazardous effect as we have very delicate tissues within the head that is the main reason we are born with the hard skull. "But man's inventions has surpassed our natural evolution pace", and our evolution has provided us with the capacity to think and prevent hazardous elements from our life. The next important problem the radiations pose is the problem of cooking your brain, they work similar to the microwave oven, when sent at prolonged intervals they fry your tissues. A simple test is to feel your ears after you have had a long conversation against the temperature on the other ear. The electronic circuitry also makes heat radiations but they are usually suppressed by the cell phone covers. The electro magnetic radiations need special radiation protectors that can safeguard you and your "only one" brain from these harmful radiation. You can read further on these safe guard radiation protectors that claim to absorb 80-90% of all radiations from the resource given below. Be cautious and make use of this cheap but useful add-on's to protect you from the unknown but potentially hazardous issues.

The Safe Guard Radiation Protector absorbs 80% to 99% of induced electro-magnetic waves and actually improves reception sensitivity during phone use. Loans - Good or Bad Debt?

When borrowing money it is usually because we lack the cash to make a large purchase, such as for a car, home or education. However, an important question to ask yourself when borrowing is if the purchase you would like to make is creating good debt or bad debt.

Good debt is considered borrowing for something that will go up in value over time. For example, real estate, a business or for education purposes. Education loans can be considered good debt because it should increase your income.

Bad debt is debt used to fund something that doesn't hold its value. Some examples would be car loans, personal loans for vacations and use of credit cards for consumable products.

Additionally, loans for bad debt are not generally good for your financial well-being because they usually have higher interest rates and are not tax deductible. Good debt loans on the other hand are frequently tax deductible and carry lower interest rates.

Ideally having no bad debt is the best. However, in some cases a certain amount of bad debt may be ok and unavoidable.

Some financial professionals claim that it is acceptable for 10-20% of your annual income to consist of loans for bad debt. But, going over 25% is getting into a danger zone that may be difficult to get out of. Once you get into this high debt range, the amount of interest paid becomes so high that it results in a cycle that cannot be reversed.

So, just remember to take into consideration the type of debt (good or bad) you are incurring prior to getting a loan. This advice can go a long way toward helping you be a financially savvy borrower.
